Respect Spiders
By Ryan Haideri ’19
Some people may think that spiders are bad because the belief is that either
they look scary or they are all dangerous and will poison us. These
creatures are not all that dangerous and poisonous, they actually help
us live normal and healthy lives by killing annoying or deadly bugs. I
have been studying spiders for a while now through reading books,
visiting museums, looking at my garden, and watching school videos.
Based on my studies, I found that most spiders eat mosquitoes and other
annoying and irritating creatures that don’t serve much of a purpose to
the world. I also found that barely any poisonous or deadly spiders live
near cities such as Boston, and yet I still wonder why whenever someone
sees a spider the person starts freaking out, sometimes causing mayhem.
When I was around the age of five started to realize that spiders aren’t so
terrifying at all. One time, when I was in class a spider climbed in
through the ceiling and the whole class started screaming and running
around, the room looking like a war zone. So, what I did was walk up to
the spider, let it land on my hand, and I let it go outside so the class
wouldn’t have to kill it in order for everyone to calm down and get on
with the lesson. My basic message is that everyone should start helping
spiders out by letting them be until they go outside. This is because if
a lot more spiders die, they could become extinct and insects that the
spiders kill such as mosquitoes could overpopulate the world, causing
malaria to become a disease that everyone has.
All in all, spiders are graceful creatures. The shelters that they make
themselves are amazing: so strong and so clever, the webs catch food and
keep spiders safe. Spider webs are a form of major engineering. Their
general structures are incredible, especially the fact that although
webs weigh just about nothing, they are still really strong. Scientists
are now doing multiple studies on spider webs because they are looking
to copy the materials that are found in the webs so that they can be
used for planes and cars to make such objects weigh less while keeping
their strength. My final question is: why would you risk the lives of
creatures that are filled with qualities such as those of spiders just
because of looks?
