On November 8, FKA twigs released an album for the first time in 4 years, titled Magdalene. Written about heartbreak along with chronic pain, her album gives us an insight into her suffering. Tracks like sad day or cellophane are the saddest songs on the album, with dreary keys and vocals that reveal pain. The only feature on the album is Future on holy terrain, a track with a more hip-hop beat and modern day rap. The album was named after Mary Magdalene, a Jewish woman who was Jesus’ closest follower and the only person who fully understood his teachings. She is considered the saint of penance in the Catholic Church, and is a feminist icon. Twigs can relate to her because of her strong advocacy for women and the suffering they both went through. In the last year she underwent laparoscopic surgery, which removed tumors from her uterus. So, her album represented both emotional and physical pain. I believe that mirrored heart and Mary Magdalene are the best songs on the album because I can personally relate to them.
